Over the last few years, Lessings studio has become a hub for creative exchange. The creative cave lies in a calm street in Berlin Mitte, across from a beautiful historical cemetery and right where the border between Germany and the GDR used to lie. This is the center of creation, where the classically trained pianist is composing every single day on one of the many instruments in his room - the tiny studio is packed with keys: an upright, a grand piano, multiple synthies, a drumset and all sorts of oddities.
Have a peak into his studio with the following live session of the album track Planet 9 with australian world class neo-soul voice James Chatburn:
The album circles around Lessings spiritual approach to the creative process. It starts with two strangers, two independent frequencies that meet, mostly by coincidence, start to collide and inevitably begin to influence and change each other. Coincidence connected the eclectic circle of musicians featured on this eleven-track album. Take the Brooklyn native rapper Stimulus, vocalist of the opening track My Place, my Home: Lessing saw him MCing at a Robert Glasper show in Berlin and was so intrigued by his stage presence, he had to approach him after the show. They started collaborating and in the following years played countless live sessions in Berlin Venues and one of Berlin's most luxurious hotels, 'L'Hotel de Rome'.
Lessing's ability to catch inspiration right at its point of origin is the foundation of the production, which features six different vocalists from the US (Stimulus) to Australia (James Chatburn), New Zealand (Graham Candy), Austria (Rezar) and of course Germany (SHAMS, Mario). The result is an album that has a cosmic magic to it and listening feels like being within that creative cave, part of the exact moment when these frequencies fused. At parts ambient, sometimes influenced by Hip-Hop or avant-pop à la James Blake, Frequency is an eclectic masterpiece from beginning to end.
One of the magical highlights ist the track 'Shepherd' with Lessings soul sister SHAMS. They spent countless hours in the studio together and find each other meditating about spirituality on a regular basis. Wonderland praised their single in the video premiere, writing: "Ushering us into a genre-bending soundscape filled with oscillating bass lines and interweaving rhythms, the artist expertly taps into elements of classical music, while leaning into contemporary avant-pop."
Since his first release via Deutsche Grammophon in 2019, it has been turbulent for the Berlin native piano virtuoso, producer, and singer Dario Lessing: with an eclectic mix of beautiful piano pieces (DNA I), collaborations with other producers (Robot Koch, Andrew Applepie, AK and more) and alternative pop projects (Better Days EP with Rezar premiered on COMPLEX), his online following grew from zero to almost one million monthly listeners and he got known as one of Berlin’s most hopeful new talents in the realm of neo-classical music. Lessing represents a new breed of self-made artists and producers that collaborate without musical or geographical boarders.
Frequency will be released on April 15th and is presented with the lead single Dreamer, accompanied by New Zealand pop-star Graham Candy. The longtime collaborator joins Dario Lessing on the lead single of his collab-packed album. ‘Dreamer’ is led by Lessings atmospheric, soothing piano and carried by playful lo-fi beats. Vocally, both artists take turns and join in the beautifully psychedelic, yet catchy hook. The classically trained pianist pays tribute to his urban upbringing in central Berlin on this beautiful piece that takes you on another very special, cosmic journey.
The artists shot a video to the lead single in the stunning nature of the spanish island Mallorca, where they also had a sponteanous jam on The Lesson, their second collab on the album. Check out the videos below:
